CDI User guide

Presentation

The Centro de Documentação e Informação [Documentation and Information Centre] (CDI) at MUDE - Museu do Design is a specialised institution that operates under mediated access by the service's technicians, due to the specific thematic content and typologies of its Collection. On-site reading takes place in the Library's reading room and loans are not available.

The CDI is responsible for supporting MUDE research and providing information to the academic and professional community, and to all interested users. The CDI is a custody centre for documents and collections related to the museum's mission.

The CDI's objectives are document processing, preservation and dissemination of bibliographic and archival fonds, meeting the needs of its internal and external user segments, as well as promoting cultural activities and academic and pedagogical cooperation.

The CDI is structured into two services, the Design Library and the Historical Archive, which hold fonds of different nature and process them appropriately so that they can be made available to the user community, in accordance with management based on The MUDE Collection development policy.

Access to and consultation of CDI resources is subject to space availability and opening hours.

Documentary Collection — Information

Library — Bibliographic resources

Existing document typologies include monographs (with various specific typologies, including catalogues, guides and reports), periodicals (magazines, yearbooks and newsletters), graphic material (posters, invitations and others) and, in residual numbers, photographs, audiovisual material, electronic resources and some objects.

The special collections, identified by formally chosen terms, meet MUDE's specific needs, as indicated online in the Portal, under the Documentary Collection tab.

These documents are organised according to the subject area or provenance that substantiated the acceptance criteria for their incorporation and/or integration. The subject areas are the basic structure of the document organisation, divided into Sections.

The printed and digital publications incorporated and/or integrated, according to graphic design criteri for editorial purposes, constitute the Editorial Design Nucleus.

The editorial graphic design materials can be searched in our online Collection, Graphic Design Nucleus (link inweb).

Printed documents in the Collection are available on the shelves according to the criteria of the UDC Table - Universal Decimal Classification, in alphabetical order starting withe first three letters of the title or surname of the author in content. Graphic resources are organised by UDC class according to the sequential criteria of their inventory number (assigned to all items in the bibliographic documentary Collection).

Archive — Archival documents

The existing document typologies include permanently preserved administrative documents, photographic and audiovisual material resulting from MUDE's activities, as well as those from external sources, which are representative of collective and individual entities linked to design.

A similar organisational structure was also considered for this category of documents, without neglecting the specificity of its fonds, reflecting the museum's production and the incorporation of external fonds, identified by their respective reference codes.

Services

Services provided to users:

Cataloguing the documentary Collection is an ongoing work. The online catalogue is available from the Nyron portal.

Materials in the Collection or on deposit at the institution can be searched in person.

Reading in person involves filling in the library's reader form on your first visit. This record is for statistical and collection management purposes only.

Users are admitted free of charge to the CDI Library reading room. However, reproductions of documents requested from the institution are subject to payment, according to the price list in force at the Lisbon City Council (available for consultation in the reading room).

Readers may only partially photograph monographs and periodicals, not in their entirety, using their personal devices (mobile phone or tablet), subject to prior authorisation and guaranteeing the security of the documents.

The use of these reproductions is the sole responsibility of the reader, in compliance with the terms of the legislation in force, namely the Code of Copyright and  Related Rights and Law no. 31/2019, which regulates the use of personal digital devices and allows digital photography in public libraries and archives.

Readers can consult the graphic, audiovisual and photographic materials in the Documentation and Information Centre's Collection and requesting them is subject to the same rules of access and consultation as the other document typologies, such as monographs and periodicals. This access will also take into account the nature and size of the documentation, its state of conservation, and constraints relating to heritage protection.

Users can take advantage of a support service offered for research, information and reference. Without prejudice to any limitations imposed by the needs of the service itself or other readers, they can request the temporary reservation of materials being studied, justifying the reason for the request. If the documents requested are not immediately available, a date for consultation will be arranged.

The Library room has 15 reading/consultation stations with WiFi access. They can be booked for group study, depending on the time, space and programme of the institution.

The reading room is equipped with anti-theft control systems, detection equipment and electromagnetic tags. Documents being consulted cannot be removed from the room.

Opening hours

Tuesday and Thursday, from 10am to 1pm; Wednesday and Friday, from 2pm to 5pm; first Saturday of every month, from 2pm to 5.30pm. Closed on other Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Behaviour conduct

The reading room is used for work, study and reading and should be a quiet place. Users should enter and leave in an orderly fashion, not making noise or disturbing those present. Mobile phones should be switched off or put on silent mode and only used if digital photography is being used for reproduction.

Material distributed for consultation and reading should be used with all the following precautions in mind: no folding, soiling, underlining, rubbing, scratching or writing, whether in pencil or pen. Any tears or missing pages that have not been noted by the service when they are handed over to the reader must be reported immediately.

No eating, drinking or smoking is allowed inside the room.

Irreparable damage to material (cuts, tears, paintings, writings, scratches, etc., irreversibly damaging or preventing its use in whole or in part) must be replaced by the user by purchasing the same document or, if this is not possible because it is not available on the market, by replacing it with a similar one, after evaluation and acceptance by the service.

After consultation, requested items cannot be put away by users, but must be returned to the CDI staff.

Changing the layout of the furniture in the room is not permitted.

The institution cannot be held responsible for any loss of personal belongings, and the user must take care to protect them when they need to leave the reading room. This absence may only be for a short period of time.

Users of the reading room must respect these rules and act responsibly.

In the event of obvious non-compliance or disrespect for the duties of politeness and civility, the user will be forced to leave the room, and the incident will be registered.
